As a veteran who transitioned from Active Duty to the Maine Army National Guard, I understand the challenges that arise when balancing military duty, work and family. Please know that no matter where you are in your transition – or how long you’ve been out of the service – the Bureau’s goal is to support you by being a one-stop resource for all of your information needs and to offer exceptional advocacy for Maine’s veterans.
We are fortunate in Maine to have a rich tradition of military service. Over 300,000 Mainers have been affected by service, whether as a veteran, retiree, family member, Guard or Reserve, or active duty personnel. Many of our veterans have returned home to become community leaders and advocates for other veterans through the Maine Military and Community Network and other Veteran Councils.

Poised just hundreds of feet from the icy North Atlantic, with a legacy of over 65 years of relentless vigilance, Naval Air Station Brunswick, Maine, carved a unique place in US and Naval history and played a critical role in maritime patrol aviation world-wide. With important contributions during World War II, Vietnam and the Cold War, and with squadron deployments to Korea, the Far East, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, tens of thousands of sailors trained and flew from Brunswick, often in harm’s way and usually out of the limelight.
At this moment in time and history, as Cold War memories fade and photographs, films and verbal narratives lose their relevance or disappear altogether, it is critically important that we collect, consolidate and conserve the thousands of facts, artifacts, stories and historical incidents that tell the complete story of U.S. maritime patrol aviation.

No One Does More For Veterans. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States is a nonprofit veterans service organization comprised of eligible veterans and military service members from the active, guard and reserve forces.
We trace our roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans’ pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves.

Music For Military: founded by US Navy Submarine Vet. We help with fundraising efforts through music. “Healing Through Every Beat”
“Honor to the Soldier, and Sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his country’s cause. Honor also to the citizen who cares for his brother in the field, and serves, as best he can, the same cause—honor to him, less only than to him, who braves, for the common good, the storms of heaven and the storms of battle.” —Abraham Lincoln
Maine Veterans Project
The Maine Veterans Project offers a variety of programs and services for Maine veterans. Through strategic partnerships, sponsorships, and generous donations we are able to keep these programs going strong while continuously striving to improve our reach.
Currently, MVP offers the following programs and services to qualified veterans:
MVP REC: The Maine Veterans Project is proud to introduce programs intended to bring veterans together through both indoor and outdoor recreation activities.
Heating Fuel: Disabled Maine Veterans with a valid ID card, a financial need, and an account with RH Foster. To establish an account, please call 947-3835 and tell
them you are setting up an account for the MVP heating fuel program.
Vehicle Donation: The MVP Vehicle Donation Program has provided dozens of inspected, reliable vehicles to Maine veterans. Every vehicle we’ve received has been from a
generous Maine company or citizen. We then make sure the vehicle is safe before finalizing the donation with a Maine veteran recipient. Transportation is vital in a
rural state like Maine and we hope to continue to grow this program.
Life-Essential Needs: Thanks to a great partnership with the Maine Military Supply’s ‘Hero of the Month’ program MVP is able to assist with life-essential needs such as
utility bills, food and clothing.

Quilts of VALOR
Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003 with a dream, literally a dream. Founder Catherine Roberts’ son Nat was deployed in Iraq. According to Catherine:
The dream was as vivid as real life. I saw a young man sitting on the side of his bed in the middle of the night, hunched over. The permeating feeling was one of utter
despair. I could see his war demons clustered around, dragging him down into an emotional gutter. Then, as if viewing a movie, I saw him in the next scene wrapped in a
quilt. His whole demeanor changed from one of despair to one of hope and well-being. The quilt had made this dramatic change. The message of my dream was: Quilts =
Healing.
Maine Veterans’ Employment and Training Services (VETS)
Veteran Assistance at Maine’s Career Centers
All of Maine’s Career Centers have staff whose sole purpose is to help veterans find jobs.
As part of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Services (VETS), each Career Center has a Disabled Veterans’ Outreach Program (DVOP) representative and a Local Veterans’ Employment Representative (LVER), who offer expert advice in translating military skills to civilian job descriptions, as well as provide general employment and training services to Maine’s veterans.
Through the DVOP and LVER programs, veterans and eligible spouses are given first priority for:
-
Job searching strategies and resources
-
Resume development assistance
-
Identification of training and educational opportunities
-
Help with applying for funding for training
